Music Therapy at Alzheimer Society Peel

Music Therapy in Adult Day Services

Through person-centred music therapy sessions, our clients in our day program centres have the opportunity to reconnect with their emotions, memories, and identities in a supportive and socially inclusive environment. Our program draws from Community Music Therapy principles, creating spaces where individuals and care partners can come together to experience the transformative power of music.

The ADS music therapy program is designed to promote cognitive stimulation, emotional well-being, and socialization, offering a holistic approach to dementia care that focuses on clients' strengths and abilities rather than their challenges. These programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of each participant, ensuring that music becomes a vehicle for self-expression and connection.

Innovative Leadership in Music Therapy and Dementia Care

Alzheimer Society Peel’s (ASP) received Gold Certification as the first Music Care Organization in Canada, which is a testament to the exceptional standards we uphold in dementia care. Our innovative approach to integrating Community Music Therapy, resource-oriented and person-centred care models has set high standards for dementia care across Canada. This leadership was recognized with the Trailblazer Award from Research in Aging (RIA), which celebrates ASP’s pioneering efforts in enhancing the emotional well-being and quality of life for people living with dementia through music

Sound Environment and Therapeutic Spaces

A key element of ASP's music therapy program is our focus on the sound environment. We are deeply mindful of how sound affects the emotional and cognitive well-being of people living with dementia.

Our music therapy sessions are intentionally designed to create positive, calming, and enriching soundscapes, which foster a sense of comfort, safety, and engagement. Whether it’s live music or carefully curated playlists, the sound environment in our ADS spaces is structured to support individuals' needs.

Advancing the Future of Music Therapy

Looking to the future, ASP remains committed to innovating and expanding our music therapy programs. Through our Music Champions Committee, we continue to advocate for the purposeful integration of music into all care settings. This committee works to ensure that people living with dementia experience the transformative power of music throughout their entire care journey. ASP will continue to lead the way in advancing the future of music therapy, striving for a world where music is an essential part of compassionate, person-centred dementia care

ASPMusicTherapy YouTube Channel

In line with our commitment to accessible care, ASP has launched the ASPMusicTherapy YouTube Channel, featuring a series of therapeutic music sessions for people living with dementia to enjoy from home. These videos are designed to engage individuals in meaningful musical experiences that promote emotional expression, cognitive stimulation, and social connection. The channel serves as a valuable resource for families and caregivers seeking to incorporate the benefits of music therapy into their daily routines
